The best home fragrances for every room

The best home fragrances for every room

It’s a wonderful feeling when, after a long day, you walk into your home and it smells like a little piece of heaven.

A home that naturally smells good will impart a feeling of cleanliness and a sense of wellbeing for you, your loved ones and visitors. It can even help reduce anxiety and stress and leave you feeling inspired and uplifted.

People will often be reminded of your home when they encounter that smell again, because our memory is intrinsically linked to scent. That should be a nice smelling memory and not one that is tainted with bad smells and synthetic fragrances.

Throw away those synthetic candles and plug-in fragrances and make your home an aromatic haven the natural way. Often you just need a small amount of essential oils (maybe 3-10 drops per room) or some fresh flowers and plant material to create a beautiful, fragrant ambience the natural way.

Choosing the right scents for each room

Listed below are suggestions for different rooms in your house. Just 1 or 2 of the scents can transform a room’s ambience and turn your home into a fragrant haven.

Hallways and Entranceways

You want to create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere for any guests and loved ones that enter your home and of course, for yourself. Uplifting Citrus with a discreet dash of Spice or Lavender will create an inviting atmosphere without creating an overpowering scent that overwhelms. Some hallways are closed spaces where doors open up from every room in the home and smells from those rooms emanate into the hallways. If that’s the case in your home, try deodorising smells such as Lemon Myrtle, Peppermint and Basil in small quantities also.

Lounge

A lounge room is a lovely space where people retreat to or mingle with other people for conversation. If you create beautiful ambience with scent in your lounge you will create fond memories. Any one or more of Geranium, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Frankincense, Cinnamon, Pepper combined with Uplifting Citrus create an ambience that is calming and grounding.

Bedroom

Bedroom fragrances may need to be calming, sensual or grounding and if a bedroom is shared then individual tastes need to be taken into account. So consider Lavender, Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Citrus, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Rose, and Jasmine according to your aromatic preferences.

Kitchen

Uplifting notes that are also deodorising (to combat certain smells such as fish, meat and onions) work well in the kitchen. Such notes are Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, Lemon Myrtle, Basil and Peppermint. A hint of spice is a nice addition also.

Dining

The dining room is an important room in the house. This is where you entertain and spend that precious evening meal with family. This is a space where it is best to ensure everyone feels at ease, so choosing the right scents is a lot of fun!

A blend that is calming, grounding, sensual and enlivening is ideal. Lavender, Jasmine, Rose, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Lime, Grapefruit, Tangerine would all work well. Add to that a hint that is reminiscent of food you are eating to create something truly special such as a hint of any spices you may be cooking eg Cinnamon, Clove, Pepper, Ginger.

Office and study spaces

This is a room where scent can assist in enhancing focus. A study showed that inhaling Lemon essential oil "mitigated exhaustion and maintained vigour" during work. Essential oils such as Peppermint, Rosemary and Basil are also good for memory enhancement, mental clarity and boosting concentration.
